Comcast deal to buy NBC from GE is complete. But what does it mean? January 30, 2011 01:59 am This is a huge story. NBCUniversal owns the Universal Studios film and theme park businesses and cable networks such as USA, Bravo, MSNBC and The Weather Channel. Now the merger combines that with Comcast's cable networks, such as E!, Versus and the Golf Channel with NBCUniversal's struggling NBC broadcast network, as well as popular cable networks This is unique in a sense that Comcast now owns more of the content it will be delivering to the viewers over its own network. The questions is whether this will block competition, stifle innovation and silence independent or opposing viewpoints. Viewers would rather have the separation between the content and the delivery mechnism. There just seems to be a lot of uneasiness from the public. Like..............huhhh ummm?! The deal values the NBC at over $30billions. This is a structured deal with cash and equity, so GE will end up retaining some ownership. On the upside is that Comcast will have better ideas on what to do with struggling NBC. Comments:
